1978: Dear Sarah Goodyear, Tolerance, Jefferson Airplane and Jorma Kaukonen
Dear Sarah,
I’ve often wondered what it was like for you to absorb the news that your first-year roommate was a rather naïve unsophisticated girl from Denver, Colorado whose only exposure to Manhattan, or any big city for that matter, was a trip or two to visit older siblings.
My 45 year later look back in the rear-view mirror remembers you as a crazy smart, creative whit with great taste in music. Sure, I had my Rocky Mountain roots where live music in epic venues was a mainstay of my formative years. But your encyclopedic knowledge of music history and your album collection was next level.
Our short one year together went by quickly and mostly separately. For me it was nice, very nice. A first attempt at building “community” far from home with someone from a different world who I admired and respected a lot.
I look back on it fondly and simply wanted you to know,
Gratefully,
Ann Simonds
