1992: Dear Barry Scoones, I was rear-ended on the M4
As an American working in England, I had countless questions for you, our company’s solicitor. Visas, National Health Service administration, tax forms and European trade and communications laws brought me to your door regularly. You always made yourself available for the extra hand holding I needed and we muddled through the differences in your kings English and my American slang.
One day, I arrived at your door to explain “Last night while commuting home I was rear-ended on the M4”. A classic fender bender at the hand of a very harried person who took complete accountability. You reassured me all would be resolved with my company issued vehicle and I went on my way.
Upon returning to my, my co-workers doubled over laughing as apparently the description of my ‘rear-ending” may have had a very different unintended meaning. You never flinched.
Thank you for sparing me what might have been a very embarrassing stop by your office and for everything else you did to help me through my chapter as an American abroad.
Cheers!
