2015: Dear Sir Martin Sorrell, Under your wing
Dear Sir Martin,
It’s hard to reinvent yourself for the last chapter of your career. When I was asked to pivot from President to CMO, from generalist to functional expert, from a “suit” to a “ponytail”, you were a constant source of support, advice and encouragement.
Sure, I had great mentors, but your version was especially astute. You opened doors to people and places that seemed really hand-picked. My dinner with the legendary Charlotte Beers and the mere suggestion that I might possess some of her spunk and smarts remains a highlight. Far beyond the reach of my own company’s contacts or resources you found ways for me to be inspired, learn and grow into my new role with confidence and care.
It’s completely on me that I did nothing to properly thank you at the time, nor to continue the conversation beyond my retirement to try to pay it forward or back in some way.
Your tireless and on-going determination to disrupt, reinvent and contribute to the future of our craft is an inspiration. So, over eight years late, I hope you will never hesitate to ask if I can possibly be of any help in return. Thank you for choosing to give me such a boost and safety net all at the same time.
Cheers and hopeful our paths will cross one day soon,
Ann Simonds
